This photographic print is a favourite from the London-based photographer Joseph Spencer's archive, which was taken in 2017.

The backstory

In the heart of the Atlantic, a remote archipelago rises from the ocean like an ancient dream, where the remnants of volcanic fury sculpt mist-shrouded mountains and verdant valleys.

This place is a sanctuary where time slows, and the earth's raw energy is palpable. Towering forests of laurel and cedar stand as guardians over calderas filled with tranquil lakes, reflecting the ever-changing skies above.

Stepping into the misty warmth of a greenhouse found on what of these remote islands, I was immediately enveloped by the earthy scent of soil and the sweet aroma of ripening pineapples. The air was thick with a gentle haze, diffusing the sunlight into a soft, golden glow that bathed everything in an ethereal light. There, amidst the rows of lush green plants, a farmer moved with quiet purpose, tending to his small crop with the care and reverence of someone who has lived in harmony with the land for generations.

It was a moment of rare serenity, where time seemed to slow, and the world outside faded away. Without disturbing the tranquillity, I captured the scene—a candid glimpse into a world where tradition and nature intertwine.
